this is the best cycling camera strap you will find out there

What kind of camera strap do I use to carry my camera on rides? That’s a question I often get asked on Instagram. In short, I use this Rille Strap, available straight from the webshop from my friend Martijn aka Fernwee.

While that's the straightforward answer, I’d also like to share why I chose this particular strap and why it has become my favourite. If you’re considering a similar purchase, keep reading for more details.

So, you feel like taking your camera with you on the bike as I do? Although I think that’s a great idea, that idea also comes with some challenges. And as I thought this through very carefully, let me tell you more about my thought process…

bag or strap

I didn’t feel like storing it in a frame bag or bar bag. Besides I don’t like the idea of bar bags on my aero bike, I also simply foresaw too much hassle to get the camera out quickly. And I feel like acting quick on photo opportunities.

So, as I noticed others carrying the camera on their back on rides, I felt like doing this the same way. I gave it a try with the regular strap. But it turned out the camera kept sliding to the front. After taking a closer look I noticed people using a 3-point strap that prevents this problem. I soon found out that this Rille strap was a common solution for many other cyclists.

why I carry it on my back

I love having my camera tight against my back while riding. When I carry my camera close to my shoulder area, thanks to the magnetic quick release I have quick access to grab it whenever I feel like shooting.

is it comfortable?

This will be a philosophical yes and no. The camera I take with me on my rides is, with this certain lens I use, weight approximately a kilo. That's a kilo hanging with a cord over my shoulder. Of course, it's still nicer to ride without that device hanging there. Nevertheless, this three-point strap holds it perfectly in place. Besides I use it in combination with this special shoulder strap made from 9 mm thick mountaineering rope. That rope is perfect as it doesn’t cut you in the neck in an uncomfortable way.

how to quick release and lock

The three-point strap is connected with the shoulder strap with a magnetic FIDLOCK buckle. It opens easily and you only need one hand. In order to lock it again, the magnetic function is really helpful. It connects and locks easily as well.

how to use and adjust it

Adjusting is really a matter of taste and experience. I wear the camera quite high on my back. My friend Ruben wears it relatively low. So, the best way to adjust the strap properly is to go out and do that on the go while making an easy ride.

Furthermore, the guys of Rille made this little video tutorial on how to use the strap. It tells you all you need to know.

disclaimer

Please let me also warn you! Cycling while taking a camera with you and especially shooting on the go can be really dangerous! If your bike riding experience is (still) limited, don’t ride and shoot! If you feel comfortable based on a solid amount of cycling experience and bike handling, please practise using the strap and the quick-release clip in a safe way!

take the shoulder strap as well

That being said, my suggestion from here would be to order the Rille stabilizer plus the shoulder strap. That shoulder strap is just as great as the stabilizer itself.

Convinced to get yourself one? Cool! Let me know how you like it in the comments below…

FAQ’s

  1. How does the Rille camera strap compare to traditional camera straps in terms of durability and material quality? The 9mm thick mountaineering rope, offers superior durability and material quality compared to traditional straps. Its design ensures it doesn't cut into your neck like flat straps often do. Having used mine for about 5 years without any signs of wear on the strap or the clips, it's a testament to its longevity. For added durability, I recommend attaching the cord directly to the camera to avoid wear on the small clips that could eventually lead to breakage.

  2. Can the Rille camera strap be used with cameras of various sizes and weights? Absolutely. The strap is robust enough to handle my 2-kilo camera setup, indicating it's suitable for a wide range of camera sizes and weights.

  3. Are there any maintenance or care instructions for the Rille camera strap? To maintain the strap's condition, I wash the cord once or twice a year in a washing machine (inside a laundry bag and along with my cycling kit) to remove sweat. Alternatively, a baby wipe can be used for cleaning if the cord becomes sticky from sweat.
